Community Support Services are deeply rooted in local communities

On September 26, Community Care for Seniors met Bay of Quinte MPP Tyler Allsopp to share information on community support services. Older adults are the fastest growing age category in Ontario and currently 35 percent of County residents are over the age of 65—nearly double the provincial average. Services for seniors are critical to the vitality of many of Prince Edward County’s residents. Everyone needs community support services — if not today, then at some point in their lives. Aidan Haley: Artist, Mentor, and Donor

Aidan Haley: Artist, Mentor, and Donor Aidan Haley has created more than 2,000 paintings, selling over 1,400 and donating more than 150 to charities—including two acrylics on canvas recently gifted to the County Seniors’ Centre. “We’ve lived in Prince Edward County for the past 25 years, and I’m sure it has added 20 years to our lives,” says 88-year-old Aidan. “I’m glad to donate these paintings. We enjoyed Tai Chi and Wii Bowling at the Seniors’ Centre and our trophy still sits in the living room. I still have the will to participate, but not the ability.” A self-taught, intuitive artist specializing in Canadian landscapes, Aidan retired early from a career in industrial sales, turning his energy to gardening and painting.

County Seniors’ Centre Helps Combat Social Isolation

What started with one person has quickly grown into a lively weekly gathering for coffee, conversation and connection each Friday morning at the County Seniors’ Centre. A report from Community Care for Seniors, funded by the Retired Teachers of Ontario Foundation, highlighted the urgent need for a County Seniors’ Centre to reduce isolation among older adults. With 35 percent of Prince Edward County residents over age 65—nearly double the provincial average—the need is especially pressing. Since its official launch in July, the Centre has offered programs five days a week, from fitness and tai chi to knitting, art classes, Wii Bowling, and Friday coffee socials.
